Writing your birth story, one small detail at a time
How to write your birth story at your own pace, with thoughtful prompts, room for uncertainty and no need to turn every experience into a happy ending.
BABY
Small newborn memory ideas for busy, tired days: a sound, a sentence, a photograph of your world. Keep a little without documenting everything.

Some newborn days seem to contain several mornings and no clear Tuesday. You have fed someone, changed something and reheated the same drink. Whether you have showered is between you and the bathroom.
A memory from this time does not need to be a polished photograph. A few words about the small person in your arms, or the strange little world around you, can be enough.
These newborn memory ideas are intended to fit around your day. You are not behind if you haven't kept anything yet, and you do not need to keep all of them.
Try noticing something that would not automatically appear in a picture:
One sentence with a date will do. If the only words you can find are “Tiny socks everywhere”, write those. It is a fairly complete description of some households.
Close-up baby photographs are lovely. So are pictures of where life is happening: the chair by the window, the pile of muslins, the card on the shelf, the corner of the room you know by heart.
Ask someone to take an everyday photograph of you with your baby if you would like one. You do not need to look ready for a portrait. You can keep it private, and you can decide later whether you like it.
Do not rearrange your baby or their care for a keepsake photograph. A picture of the surroundings can tell the story when taking one of the baby is inconvenient.
Add a small caption while you still know what is happening. “Our usual afternoon spot” says more than a file name full of numbers.
The first month is also about the people who made it possible. Keep a note of a meal, a kind message, a visit you enjoyed or a practical kindness.
If you want to keep a few baby firsts, the first visit from somebody you love or your first familiar outing can belong alongside the usual milestones. Save a sentence about who was there, rather than just a date in a box.
These memories do not need to pretend everything was easy. You can remember that somebody arrived with dinner without turning the evening into a scene from an advert.
If a message contains something personal about someone else, ask before sharing it. Your private collection and your social feed can have entirely different boundaries.
Here is a first-month note you can reuse:
The two details might be one line each. A quick voice note works too; try our ideas for recording little voices when a recording feels easier than typing.
A quick written memory, a photograph or a voice recording is also the sort of small entry Andrew and I are building Kins around. You can add the words that explain the picture, or keep a recording when speaking is easier than typing. The app is on its way; there’s no need to wait for it before starting with whatever you have to hand.
You can collect notes in one place and arrange them another time. During a busy stretch, finding the same note again is already an achievement. Decorative borders can wait.
Our illustrated six-page keepsake has room for the first hello, a photograph, three little notes and a letter to your baby. Each note has a date, a detail about your baby and a detail about the people around them. Three notes might cover a day, a month, or a stretch you remember much later. Nobody is counting.
Print at A4 actual size or fit to your paper. Choose a page, write a line when you feel like it, then keep it with the photographs from this time. If the fridge is already covered, the back of a notebook will do nicely.
You may have a week with twelve pictures and a week with none. That does not tell you how much love or attention either week contained.
A baby memory book can start later. We have a gentle way to catch up that does not involve pretending you remember everything. You can also keep a handful of things in a baby keepsake box.
For today, choose one detail if you want to. Then put the phone down, close the notebook, and carry on with the day you are actually having.
